The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance announced today that an airplane owned by a Long Island man convicted of tax evasion will be auctioned Thursday, April 17, at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma.
The airplane is a 1975 Beechcraft A36 Bonanza, a six-passenger, single engine aircraft. The auction will take place at the airport, 100 Arrivals Avenue, at 1 p.m.
The airplane's owner is Robert Mark, of West Babylon. He and his company, Mark Systems International Corporation, of Melville, currently owe New York State nearly $450,000 for failing to pay the state and local sales taxes that the company collected.
In 2001, Mark, as president and owner of the company, pleaded guilty in Nassau County Court to one count of first-degree falsifying of business records. A Department audit showed that Mark failed to pay $73,426 in taxes between January 1995 and February 1996.
The audit showed that Mark doctored his books and failed to report more than $850,000 in taxable sales that he collected from customers. Instead of remitting the tax money to the state, Mark kept the money.
Thursday's auction will be conducted by David R. Maltz and Co., Inc., of Plainview. Prospective bidders can inspect the aircraft between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on April 17.
